I grew up hearing stories and folklore about the Duende, the Little People of the Philippines. I would share these stories with friends disguised as ghost stories to prove that the unseen might be real. So, when I first heard of Liv’s work with the Kontomblé, I got chills. I’ve never heard of a space where my childhood fairy tales were not only real, but where they were also honored and sacred as well.
I'm so grateful to Liv, Kontomblé, and the EA community who have taught me so much! It’s hard to put it into words. The way I experience Kontomblé medicine is that they are ancient, honest, and dynamic. It was truly an honor to be able to study with them. The teachings went beyond the gatherings and into the regular happenings of daily life. I would come to circle and be able to make connections and understand the signs and lessons that I was being shown between our gatherings. Signs that I didn’t realize were signs until I heard each vulnerable, heart-centered share from community or teaching from Liv or message from Spirit. Through continuing to show up and practicing vulnerability myself, I learned that I too am lovable even with all of my imperfections. Together, I felt loved and seen on a soul level.
